PI L-412, L-417 and V-417 Linear Stages Compared

PI’s L-412, L-417 and V-417 stages address related industrial positioning tasks through different frame sizes and drive architectures. L-412 uses a 116 mm-wide ballscrew platform, while L-417 and V-417 use a wider 166 mm class. L stages use rotary servo/ballscrew transmission; V-417 applies ironless magnetic direct drive. These differences determine selection and replacement compatibility.
Key Specifications
L-412 | 116 mm width; ballscrew; family load up to 400 N |
L-417 | 166 mm width; ballscrew; family load up to 450 N |
V-417 | 166 mm width; ironless 3-phase linear motor; load up to 450 N |
V-417 nominal / peak force | 87 N / 300 N in inspected current table |
Feedback | Exact rotary/linear and incremental/absolute configuration must be selected |
Travel | L-412 overview to 610 mm; 417 overview to 813 mm; confirm current code |
Environment | Selected side covering strip / purge-air provisions; not a universal sealed rating |
Applications and Industries
Industrial laser processing, scanning, electronics assembly and inspection with a defined screw-drive or direct-drive requirement.

Review Summary
Consider the screw-driven L models for the required force/speed duty and the V-417 for smooth direct-drive scanning. Compare actual load-side performance and installed cost. The stage’s supported load is not its available horizontal drive force, and a direct motor does not remove friction from the rolling guides.
