Ocado Hummingbird Robot Review Summary
Hummingbird robots travel across the top of a grid of bins stacked up to 21 high, lifting the bins they need. Each robot weighs only 55 kg thanks to a carbon fibre frame and about 50% 3D-printed parts, and fits in a single grid cell so robots can pass one another. It reaches 4 m/s, carries 35 kg, draws an average 110 W, and uses 39% less energy than the previous model. Batteries are swapped automatically in under 60 seconds about every two hours, and wireless messages every 100 ms coordinate thousands of robots. Up to 1,200 bins per hour reach each workstation.
