Company History

Seiko Epson traces its origins to Daiwa Kogyo, founded in Suwa, Nagano, in May 1942. The company became Suwa Seikosha in 1959 and Seiko Epson in 1985. Epson started producing robots in 1980. They were designed by its own engineers for internal automation needs, and that origin in high-precision assembly still defines the range. Epson today cites a robotics history of more than 40 years and says it introduced the world's first folding-arm six-axis robot.
Corporate Structure

Epson Robots is not a separate company. It is part of Seiko Epson's Manufacturing-related and Wearables segment, which combines manufacturing solutions such as industrial robots with wristwatches, watch movements, quartz devices and semiconductors. The group's other segments are Printing Solutions and Visual Communications. Seiko Epson has 89 group companies including the parent, 21 in Japan and 68 overseas.
Seiko Group and members of the founding Hattori family hold about 10% of Seiko Epson's shares, and the company is managed independently of Seiko Group. In the Americas the robot business is based at 1650 E. Glenn Curtiss Street, Carson, California, with a further operation in Barueri, Brazil.
