da Vinci 5 Review Summary
For more than twenty years the main criticism of robotic surgery was that the surgeon could see but not feel. The da Vinci 5 answers it with Force Feedback: sensors in the instruments measure push and pull at the tip and return it to the surgeon's hands. Intuitive reports up to 43% less force on tissue in preclinical data. Around this the company has rebuilt the system, with more than 150 design changes, a new 3D display with four times the pixels and 10,000 times the computing power of the previous Xi model, which supports data analysis and training tools.
Pros
Force Feedback for the first time on a da Vinci system
Higher-resolution 3D vision
Much greater computing power for data and training tools
Redesigned console and workflow
Built on the most widely used surgical robot platform
Cons
Force Feedback on six instruments only, with a stated contraindication
Clinical figures come from the maker and from early cases
Who It Is For
The da Vinci 5 is the latest surgical robot from Intuitive for minimally invasive surgery, and the first da Vinci to let the surgeon feel forces at the instrument tip. Intuitive does not publish a price. This review covers its features, components and intended use. It is general information and not medical advice.
