History

Melonee Wise founded Fetch Robotics in 2014. Its first robots were the Fetch mobile manipulator and the Freight mobile base, both built on the open-source Robot Operating System, and it went on to sell mobile robots for moving goods in warehouses.
Zebra Technologies, the maker of barcode scanners and mobile computers, already owned about 5% of Fetch when it bought the rest in 2021 for USD 290 million. Fetch then had annualized sales of about USD 10 million, so the price reflected expectations more than current business.

The Wind-Down

In December 2025 Zebra said it had decided to explore strategic options for its robotics automation business, which meant selling the unit or closing it, with a decision expected in early 2026. Sources cited in press reports said the business had not grown quickly enough and that Zebra chose to concentrate on its core products.
Most robotics staff were to be laid off by the end of 2025.
About a quarter were to stay until March 2026 to look after existing deployments.
The future of robots at customer sites depended on whether a buyer was found.
One customer, ODW Logistics, had reported an expected 42% improvement in pick rates with the robots less than two months before the news.

What This Means for Buyers
Companies running Fetch or Zebra mobile robots should check support arrangements directly with Zebra. The sources retrieved for this profile do not confirm whether the unit was eventually sold or closed.
Lessons
A large acquirer does not guarantee a product's future.
Mobile robot businesses need scale to be profitable, and USD 10 million in sales at a USD 290 million price left a large gap to close.
