Eddie van der Lande founded the company in Veghel in 1949. A partnership in 1963 with the American firm Rapistan, which licensed its automated material handling systems to the Dutch company, set its direction. Management bought the business out in 1988, and it adopted the Vanderlande name the following year. From the late 1980s it concentrated increasingly on airports, a market that grew with tighter security requirements.
