Company History

Mitsubishi Electric was established on January 15, 1921, when the electrical machinery business of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, today Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was spun off from its Kobe shipyard. From electric motors for ships it grew into a broad electrical and electronics group. Its businesses today span energy and electric systems, building systems, factory automation, automotive equipment, electronic devices, air conditioning and home appliances, information and communication systems, and space systems.
The group has reshaped its portfolio repeatedly. It left the mobile phone business in 2008, ended LCD television production in 2024, acquired the Italian air conditioning company DeLclima in 2015, and in 2023 announced a JPY 100 billion chip factory in Kumamoto Prefecture. Factory automation has remained a core business throughout.
Corporate Structure
Factory Automation Systems is reported inside the Industry and Mobility segment, together with Automotive Equipment.
Business, year to March 2026 | Revenue | Operating profit |
Industry and Mobility segment | JPY 1,673.8 billion | JPY 131.0 billion |
Factory Automation Systems | JPY 798.2 billion | JPY 76.6 billion |
Automotive Equipment | JPY 875.6 billion | JPY 54.4 billion |
Factory automation is now the more profitable half of the segment. Automotive Equipment revenue fell by JPY 43.5 billion, because of lower sales to Japanese carmakers in China and a downsized car multimedia business in North America, and the company is restructuring that portfolio.

The company attributes the growth to capital expenditure related to smartphones and industrial machinery in China and to AI-related semiconductor investment in Japan and China. Profit rose on higher revenue and better product prices.
For the group as a whole, revenue rose 7% to JPY 5,894.7 billion and operating profit rose 11% to JPY 433.0 billion, after a charge of JPY 105.3 billion for an employee support program called Next-Stage.
