Meridian Laboratory ROTOCON ERG and ERGT Rotary Grounds Review: Specs, Price and Applications
Updated: 4 days ago

ROTOCON ERG and ERGT provide a high-current electrical connection between stationary and rotating parts of a process. ERG mounts at an accessible end of the assembly; ERGT offers a through bore for an over-shaft installation or central service path. Meridian Laboratory also engineers custom physical rotary grounds when a standard mounting, bore or envelope does not fit.
Quick Verdict
Consider these rotary grounds for a defined welding, plating or similar process-current path. The useful selection distinction is end access versus a through bore, followed by the exact current, connection and speed limits. In particular, the ERGT table assumes continuous DC duty, specifies lower AC ampacity and requires every conductive body stud to be used for the listed current.

Design and Engineering Assessment
The ERGT models do not offer a single maximum combination. The smaller-envelope 2000 A row allows a bore up to 2 inches and 200 rpm continuous. The larger-bore 2000 A row reaches 2.5 inches but lists 150 rpm continuous. The 3000 A row lists a 1-inch bore, not the largest hole offered elsewhere in the family.
Connection layout is part of current capacity. In the smaller envelope, the 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 A rows use one, two, three and four conductive body studs respectively. The table expressly requires all studs for the rated maximum. A mechanically convenient single lead on a multi-stud unit cannot simply inherit the full rating.
Low and stable contact resistance matters because resistive heating rises with current squared. As an illustrative circuit calculation, an additional 100 micro-ohms at 1000 A dissipates 100 W. This is an engineering example, not a measured ROTOCON loss. Include the cable lugs, workpiece joint and other connections when assessing the complete path.
The word ground describes the process connection here. A welding return or plating conductor is not automatically a machine protective-earth function, and an application list is not a safety certification. Define the process-current circuit and the machine’s protective bonding requirements separately.
End-Mounted ERG Versus Through-Bore ERGT

Use ERG where the workpiece or rotating assembly provides suitable end access. Select the actual threaded, stud or flange construction from the approved drawing. The ERG-400 and ERG-800 current labels do not establish a shared package or identical mounting details.
Choose ERGT when the ground must surround a shaft or preserve a central route. Its hole is a mechanical passage, not a pressure seal. Welding gas or another medium needs its own contained path and, where necessary, an appropriate rotary union.
Duty,Current and Speed Must Match
Use the ERGT table’s 100% DC duty condition when interpreting its current values. Obtain an application-specific AC rating when AC is involved. Do not apply the DC value unchanged or invent a universal derating factor.
Continuous and momentary RPM are separate limits. Define the speed profile and duration of any transient operation with the supplier. Broad claims that contact behavior is unaffected by rotation do not cancel the model’s mechanical or thermal speed limits.
Conductors,Studs and Mechanical Loads
Design the external conductors to use every required body stud and provide the specified connection quality. Establish the approved cable sizes, lugs, contact surfaces and tightening procedure. Check the current path through the workpiece as well as through the rotary component.
Provide cable strain relief and manage side loading. The ERG-400 mounting sheet specifically calls for adequate solid electrical contact and strain relief. Do not transfer a load allowance from one drawing to every ERG or ERGT construction.
Custom Physical Rotary Grounds

The custom offering covers engineered rotary hardware rather than a generic consulting service. Define the physical envelope, mounting method, bore, materials, sealing and process-current duty that a standard model cannot meet. A custom order needs its own drawing and acceptance specification.
Non-mercury and RoHS versions are offered for identified configurations. Specify the required construction and obtain the relevant documentation; do not label every family member mercury-free or universally compliant. Material and environmental requirements belong to the exact ordered build.
Commissioning and Process Acceptance
Verify the intended process-current path before production and prevent it from being routed unintentionally through machine bearings or other unsuitable joints. Inspect retention, conductor clearance and the complete installation at the intended rotation.
Evaluate current stability, connection temperatures and process results under representative duty. Agree the measurements and limits with the responsible process engineer. The rotary ground does not regulate welding current or guarantee a finished weld, plated layer or cutting result by itself.
Applications and Selection
Rotary welding, electroplating, electropolishing, plasma cutting and rotating deposition equipment
For Meridian Laboratory ROTOCON ERG and ERGT Rotary Grounds, define the actual machine duty before selecting an ordering configuration. Include the required operating point, available installation space, environment and control interfaces. The specification table describes the product or family; the surrounding machine determines which of those features matters for the intended job.
Price and Value
Price: Request a quote for the exact assembly. Include the selected transmission paths, mounting, terminations, mating hardware and required acceptance documentation. Compare the complete installed scope, including cables, hoses or optical connections where applicable.
Evaluate alternatives at the same operating point and environmental conditions. Match the actual current or media requirements, speed duty, envelope and interfaces. Include service access and supplier support in the comparison rather than selecting from unrelated family maxima.
Pros and Cons
Advantages
End-mounted and through-bore versions address different layouts
Explicit ERGT DC-duty, stud and speed conditions support informed sizing
Custom physical builds can address a defined mounting or envelope requirement
Limitations
AC ampacity is lower than the stated ERGT DC basis
All conductive studs are required for rated current
Bore, current and speed maxima belong to different configurations
Who Should Consider Meridian Laboratory ROTOCON ERG and ERGT Rotary Grounds?

Meridian Laboratory ROTOCON ERG and ERGT Rotary Grounds FAQ
How do ERG and ERGT differ?
ERG serves an end-mounted arrangement; ERGT adds a through bore for an over-shaft installation or central route. Select the exact mounting and electrical drawing.
Can the largest ERGT bore be combined with the highest listed current?
Not from the cited table. The 2.5-inch-bore row is 2000 A, while the 3000 A row lists a 1-inch bore.
Are ERGT ampere values equally valid for AC and DC?
No. The table assumes 100% DC duty and states that AC has lower ampacity. Obtain the applicable AC rating.
Must every conductive body stud be connected?
Yes, the manufacturer requires all conductive studs to achieve the listed maximum current. Design the external connections accordingly.
Is momentary RPM the continuous operating limit?
No. The smaller-envelope rows list 200 rpm continuous and 400 momentary; the larger rows list 150 continuous and 300 momentary.
Is the bore a built-in fluid rotary union?
No. A central hole provides space. A fluid or gas transfer boundary needs its own contained path and suitable union where required.
Is a process rotary ground automatically protective earth?
No automatic safety qualification is assumed. Specify process return and protective bonding functions separately.
When is a custom rotary ground appropriate?
When the required physical envelope, bore, mounting, materials, environment or process duty cannot be met by the approved standard construction. Obtain a configuration-specific design and acceptance plan.
