Company History
The research behind the system was done at SRI International in the late 1980s. Frederic Moll, John Freund and Robert Younge wrote the business plan for the company, which was founded in 1995 as Intuitive Surgical Devices. It began selling the da Vinci system in Europe in 1999, and in 2000 it raised USD 46 million in an initial public offering and received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for general laparoscopic surgery. Approval for prostate surgery followed in 2001. In 2003 it merged with its rival Computer Motion, which ended the patent litigation between them.
