Harmonic Drive RSF Review: Specs, Price and Applications
Updated: 4 days ago

Harmonic Drive RSF solid-shaft servo actuators combine a brushless motor, reduction gear and incremental feedback. The standard RSF, RSF-Mini and RSF-Supermini ranges cover distinctly different sizes and operating points; they should be selected as specific actuator configurations with a compatible external servo drive.
Quick Verdict
RSF is useful when a motor-and-gear assembly with a supported output shaft fits the machine better than independently assembled motion components. The central selection task is choosing the correct range and ratio. Rated torque, continuous limits, momentary peaks and output-equivalent encoder counts must stay attached to their exact model.

Design and Engineering Assessment
The three ranges share a broad actuator concept but do not share one torque envelope. Standard RSF-17A through 32A occupy a different size and power range from Mini 8B through 14B, while Supermini 3C and 5B address much smaller mechanisms. A source referring to 34–330 Nm should not be interpreted as the specification of an RSF-Mini 8B or a Supermini 5B.
For the standard RSF-32A ratio 100 row, the manufacturer lists 98 Nm rated torque at 30 rpm and 330 Nm maximum momentary torque. Those values describe different operating conditions. A routine production cycle must be checked against rated duty and thermal conditions rather than sized as though momentary peak were continuously available.
The Mini 14B ratio 100 example lists 6 Nm maximum continuous torque, 28 Nm maximum torque and 60 rpm maximum speed. The same-size ratio 30 has different limits. Increasing reduction changes the motor-speed and reflected-inertia relationship as well as output torque; it is not a free increase in every dimension of performance.
An integrated gear and output bearing can simplify mechanical assembly, but the payload's moment and shaft loading still need checking. The distance from the output support to the tool or workpiece can govern deflection and bearing demand. A compact actuator should be compared with its complete mounting structure rather than treated as an isolated rigid rotary source.
Standard RSF: Larger Solid-Shaft Axes
The standard ordering table lists RSF-17A, 20A, 25A and 32A with ratios 50 and 100. Rated speed is listed separately from momentary torque. Select the complete model and ratio using the actual load cycle, including acceleration, holding intervals and reversals.
Standard RSF is described for compatible third-party drives and Harmonic Drive RTL or REL arrangements. Confirm the exact motor, feedback, cables and amplifier parameters. A200 VAC drive-combination label is not an instruction to connect mains directly to a servo motor's phase terminals.
RSF-Mini: Sizes 8B, 11B and 14B
RSF-Mini uses a smaller 24V-oriented drive arrangement and incremental feedback with a magnetic-pole sensor. The current table separates continuous and maximum torque. This distinction matters for joints that hold load for long periods rather than only accelerate it briefly.
The Mini table lists output-equivalent quadrature counts that depend on gear ratio. These are different from an independently measured output position and from positioning accuracy. Use the manufacturer's accuracy figure and the complete mechanical error budget when specifying the machine's final result.
RSF-Supermini: Sizes 3C and 5B
The Supermini 5B ratio 100 example has 0.44 Nm rated torque at 45 rpm and 1.4 Nm maximum torque. The current page lists mass 66 g without brake and 86 g with brake, excluding the clamp filter. This provides a concrete compact-axis example without transferring larger RSF ratings to a miniature mechanism.
Supermini feedback ordering specifies 200 encoder lines for 3C and 500 lines for 5B. Quadrature interpretation and gear reduction produce different equivalent output counts. Keep line count, decoded count, output-equivalent count and actual positioning accuracy distinct during controller setup.
Drive Compatibility and Integrated-Drive Alternatives
The family pages name several compatible Harmonic Drive amplifier arrangements, while specific Mitsubishi-compatible options require the corresponding ordered actuator version. Verify the exact approved combination, extension cables, commutation and feedback interpretation. A familiar amplifier family name alone does not approve a substitute configuration.
RSF-5B IDT is a separate product with an integrated CANopen drive. It should not be substituted for a standard external-drive Supermini solely because both names contain RSF-5B. Compare power distribution, host interface, cabling, feedback and service procedure as a complete axis arrangement.
Commissioning and Acceptance
Before applying a load, verify wiring, encoder direction, current limits, commutation and the reference procedure. Incremental feedback does not by itself retain a unique absolute machine coordinate after power loss. Define homing or another validated reference strategy for the actual machine.
Test the representative loaded cycle for temperature, settling, repeatability and the required approach directions. Include brake sequencing where fitted and a controlled response to drive faults or power interruption. Actuator component specifications do not establish the safety or compliance of the completed robot or machine.
Applications and Selection
Solid-shaft rotary positioning, compact robot mechanisms and precision equipment axes selected for their actual torque, speed, load support and control requirements.
For Harmonic Drive RSF, define the actual machine duty before selecting an ordering configuration. Include the required operating point, available installation space, environment and control interfaces. The specification table describes the product or family; the surrounding machine determines which of those features matters for the intended job.
Price and Value
Price: Request a quote for the exact configuration. Compare the product, compatible control equipment, required mechanical parts, cabling and commissioning as one installed system. A component price alone does not represent the cost of a working automation axis.
Evaluate an alternative against the same duty and acceptance criteria. Match the continuous operating requirement first, then compare transient capability, feedback, mechanical fit and support. This avoids choosing between superficially similar products whose ratings describe different operating conditions.
Pros and Cons
Advantages
Coordinated motor, gear and feedback assembly
Three ranges cover different mechanical scales
Model-specific rated and peak data support deliberate sizing
Solid output arrangement and compatible drive options can simplify integration
Limitations
Similar family names can lead to incorrect cross-model specifications
External amplifier and exact feedback wiring remain necessary
Incremental resolution does not establish absolute position or loaded accuracy
Peak capability, shaft loads and thermal duty require separate checks
Who Should Consider Harmonic Drive RSF?
Consider Harmonic Drive RSF for solid-shaft rotary positioning, compact robot mechanisms and precision equipment axes selected for their actual torque, speed, load support and control requirements. Establish the required operating point and installation interfaces before choosing the configuration, and use a representative loaded cycle as the acceptance basis.
Harmonic Drive RSF FAQ
Which products does this RSF review cover?
It compares standard RSF, RSF-Mini and RSF-Supermini and explains their different sizes, ratings and feedback arrangements. They remain separate configurations and catalog identities; a shared family review does not make them interchangeable.
Is RSF-Mini the 34–330 Nm actuator range?
The current manufacturer pages place Mini in sizes 8B, 11B and 14B. The much larger momentary-peak figures belong to standard RSF sizes 17A through 32A. Use the exact model table rather than transferring a source headline between ranges.
Is 330 Nm a continuous RSF rating?
No. The standard RSF-32A ratio 100 row lists 330 Nm as maximum momentary torque and 98 Nm as rated torque at 30 rpm. Continuous duty, thermal conditions and repeated accelerations must be evaluated for the actual operating cycle.
How small is the Supermini 5B example?
The current page lists 66 g without brake and 86 g with brake, excluding the clamp filter. For ratio 100, it lists 0.44 Nm rated torque at 45 rpm and 1.4 Nm maximum torque. These figures must not be combined with a larger range's torque or speed.
Does an encoder count establish positioning accuracy?
No. Encoder lines, quadrature counts and output-equivalent counts describe different quantities. Accuracy also depends on transmission behavior, mounting, load and reference strategy. Use the manufacturer's exact accuracy specification and validate the machine result.
Does every RSF have an integrated CANopen drive?
No. The ranges reviewed use an external compatible drive. RSF-5B IDT is a separately specified integrated-drive product with a different integration boundary. Choose its full model and host arrangement deliberately.
What is the price?
Request a quote for the exact range, size, ratio, feedback, brake, cables and drive combination. There is no verified universal family price here, and actuator-only cost is not the complete installed-axis cost.
What should an acceptance test verify?
Verify the exact loaded duty, thermal behavior, settling and positioning result, including the required approach directions. Test reference recovery, fault handling and brake sequencing where applicable. Assess machine safeguards separately from the actuator's component specifications.
Prices are indicative and may change. Confirm the final configuration, commercial terms and delivery schedule before ordering.
