ACS PDIcl Pulse Direction Drive Interface manufacturer product image

ACS PDIcl connects third-party pulse/direction stepper or servo drives to an ACS SPiiPlus EtherCAT control system. It produces position commands and accepts configured encoder feedback for verification or closed-loop operation. It is an interface module, so external drives still supply motor power and perform their assigned drive functions.

Quick Verdict

Consider PDIcl when a machine needs to retain suitable pulse/direction drives while adding them to an ACS motion architecture with feedback. Its distinction from the open-loop PDMnt is the feedback path. Confirm the absolute-encoder channel count on the exact order: the current product-page summary and the linked datasheet do not describe that maximum identically.

Design and Engineering Assessment

Four million command pulses per second is a pulse-generation limit, not a 4 MHz mechanical control bandwidth or an accuracy claim. Required pulse frequency depends on commanded velocity and the external drive’s electronic gearing. Increasing pulses per unit travel can consume that frequency budget without improving the mechanics.

Pulse width and pulse rate must also be compatible. At four million pulses per second, a full pulse period is 250 ns. A setting near the stated 80-microsecond maximum width cannot fit that period. Select timing that meets the receiving drive’s requirements at the intended command frequency.

The current product page summarizes feedback as up to four channels with four AqB and two absolute interfaces, while the linked February 2026 datasheet’s ordering table permits absolute-interface selections through four. This discrepancy should be resolved against the exact approved part number before assuming four absolute channels.

Feedback verification is useful only when the encoder location matches the fault or error to be detected. A motor encoder does not directly measure every downstream coupling, belt or load. Decide whether the objective is lost-step detection, motor-position control or actual load-position control.

Command Interface and External Drive Scope

Confirm that the receiving drive accepts the module’s differential RS-422 pulse/direction signals. Check polarity, timing and input behavior using the relevant drive documentation. Do not assume that every device labelled pulse/direction has the same electrical interface.

The module does not replace the external drive’s power stage, motor supply or motor-specific setup. Define which controller and drive close each loop. A successful EtherCAT connection alone does not establish a correctly configured motor axis.

Feedback Options and the Channel-Count Discrepancy

Specify each encoder’s protocol, electrical format, supply requirement and intended axis assignment. Resolve the product-page versus datasheet absolute-channel discrepancy with ACS on the exact configuration. Keep the approved ordering code and feedback drawing with the machine records.

Use the feedback for a defined purpose and acceptance criterion. Check direction and scale at low speed, then verify following behavior under representative load. An encoder count is position information, not a guarantee of load accuracy or detection of every mechanical fault.

Pulse Rate,Resolution and Motion Planning

Calculate pulse demand from travel units, electronic gearing and peak commanded velocity. Leave practical margin for the receiving interface and the actual move profile. Do not select the finest pulse increment solely because a higher number appears more precise.

Check acceleration, stopping behavior and the external drive’s handling of command loss or faults. The complete control architecture determines how a failed or disabled drive is detected and how other axes respond. Validate that behavior as part of the machine sequence.

Capture,Trigger and Brake Functions

PDIcl includes MARK capture, PEG event generation and brake-control outputs in its documented I/O scope. These functions have separate electrical and timing specifications from the motor command output. A trigger-output frequency must not be copied into the pulse/direction command specification.

Check output loading and the brake’s actual electrical requirement. A control output is not automatically suitable to switch any brake directly. Use the approved electrical arrangement, and define the relationship between motion enable, brake release and fault response.

Commissioning and Value

Verify the EtherCAT topology, axis mapping, pulse scale, direction, feedback and drive fault/enable wiring. Exercise the machine at representative speed and load and check its response to the faults relevant to the process.

Compare retaining existing pulse/direction drives with using native compatible drives on a complete-system basis. Include interface hardware, cabling, feedback options, commissioning and long-term support. Preserving an existing power stage may be useful, but it does not remove integration work.

Applications and Selection

Precision OEM multi-axis equipment using the ACS SPiiPlus control platform

For ACS PDIcl Pulse Direction Drive Interface, define the actual machine duty before selecting an ordering configuration. Include the required operating point, available installation space, environment and control interfaces. The specification table describes the product or family; the surrounding machine determines which of those features matters for the intended job.

Price and Value

Price: Request a quote for the exact configuration. Compare the product, compatible control equipment, required mechanical parts, cabling and commissioning as one installed system. A component price alone does not represent the cost of a working automation axis.

Evaluate an alternative against the same duty and acceptance criteria. Match the continuous operating requirement first, then compare transient capability, feedback, mechanical fit and support. This avoids choosing between superficially similar products whose ratings describe different operating conditions.

Pros and Cons

Advantages

  • Connects suitable third-party pulse/direction drives to ACS control

  • Feedback supports verification and closed-loop architectures

  • Two- and four-axis versions support different machine scopes

Limitations

  • External drives and motor power supplies remain required

  • Absolute-channel summary and linked datasheet require configuration clarification

  • Pulse resolution and pulse-rate capability do not define machine accuracy

Who Should Consider ACS PDIcl Pulse Direction Drive Interface?

OEM motion engineers selecting an exact drive or interface configuration for a documented machine duty

ACS PDIcl Pulse Direction Drive Interface FAQ

Does PDIcl supply motor power?

No. It interfaces to external stepper or servo drives, which supply motor current and require their own suitable power and configuration.

Can it work with any EtherCAT controller automatically?

The documented intended architecture uses an ACS SPiiPlus EtherCAT MainDevice. Do not assume unrestricted third-party controller compatibility.

Is four million pulses per second a servo bandwidth?

No. It is the command pulse-rate limit. Mechanical and closed-loop performance depend on the complete drive, feedback, load and tuning.

Can the maximum pulse width be used at the maximum rate?

No. Timing must fit the pulse period and the receiving drive’s requirements. Four million pulses per second has a 250 ns full period.

How many absolute encoders can be assumed?

Confirm the exact configuration with ACS. The current page summarizes two absolute interfaces, while the linked datasheet ordering table offers selections through four.

How does it differ from PDMnt?

PDIcl provides configured encoder feedback for verification or closed-loop operation. The documented PDMnt architecture is open loop without encoder channels.

Does an encoder prove load-position accuracy?

Not by itself. Encoder location, mechanical transmission and calibration determine what position is actually measured.

What belongs in a quote request?

State axes, external drive interface and timing, feedback protocols and count, I/O, mounting, controller architecture and the intended motion and fault acceptance criteria.

Prices are indicative and may change. Confirm the final configuration, commercial terms and delivery schedule before ordering.
