Vicarious Surgical Robotic System
The Vicarious Surgical System is a single-port robotic system in development for minimally invasive abdominal surgery, with two instrument arms of 28 sensors each and a 3D stereoscopic camera inserted through one incision.
Vicarious Surgical takes a different approach from multi-arm surgical robots. Its two instrument arms and a camera enter the body through one port, and all robotic motion happens inside the patient, where the arms can reach down, sideways, up and even backwards. Each arm carries 28 sensors, and the camera is a 3D high-definition stereoscopic unit. The goal is a 1.5 cm incision; current disposables need 1.8 cm. Most important: the system is not FDA cleared and is not for sale in the United States. It holds a Breakthrough Device Designation, and the company presents its figures as design goals.
