History and Ownership

Hildegard and Walter Winkler founded WITRON in 1971. The company has since moved to a dual foundation model, under which ownership sits with foundations that also support charitable work. WITRON says it has never laid off staff or cut working hours for lack of projects.

At the start of 2025 it acquired Hieber, a metal processing and welding company in Woerth an der Donau with more than 100 employees, to strengthen its own manufacturing.

How WITRON Works

WITRON acts as general contractor. It designs the logistics concept, builds the mechanics and software, installs the system and in many cases runs and maintains it on site for the customer. Seven in ten customers have ordered two or more systems.

Its best-known system is OPM, a fully automated solution for picking cases onto store-ready pallets and roll containers, now in use in more than 100 food retail distribution centers.
