Design and Operating Principle

Passive compliance devices are open loop: an external pressure regulator sets air pressure and therefore force. Because gravity acts differently in each orientation, the regulator setting must change when a new orientation is programmed to keep force constant, which makes passive units best for flat or prismatic parts.

With no electronics, the AFD52 is cheap and robust, ideal for light-duty spindles.

Integration and Selection

Mount a high-speed spindle, add a pressure regulator and program pressure per orientation.

Use the AFD72 for more force.
