Robotic bag palletizing gripper category illustration

The Piab FBG-22 is a finger-type bag gripper for palletizing woven cloth, plastic or paper bags of heavy products such as grains, chemicals, dog food, minerals and plastic resins, even in harsh environments.

It handles bags up to 22 kg (50 lb), with manual bag width adjustment from 290 to 450 mm. The gripper weighs 17 kg, or 20 kg with the slip-sheet option, and uses 9.5 mm fingers with ball-nose ends, a decker mechanism, spring-return decking plates, a top bag clamp, high-flow solenoid valves and an ultrasonic bag presence sensor.

Quick Verdict

A rugged, lightweight bag gripper whose decker mechanism places bags accurately for tight, stable pallets.

Design and Operating Principle

Finger grippers slide tines under the bag, supporting it from below instead of relying on vacuum, which is unreliable on woven or dusty bags. Ball-nose ends help the fingers slide under the bag without snagging.

The decker mechanism controls how the bag drops off the fingers onto the pallet, giving accurate placement that matters for tightly packed pallets. Spring-return decking plates guide the bag and a top clamp holds it during fast moves.

An ultrasonic sensor confirms bag presence regardless of colour or material.

Integration and Selection

Adjust width for the bag size and integrate with a roller conveyor pick station. Choose the slip-sheet option if layers need separators.

Ensure the robot payload covers 17 to 20 kg plus the 22 kg bag.
