Piab Carton Gripper Review: Specs, Price and Applications

The Piab Carton Gripper is a palletizing end-of-arm tool for plastic bins, slip-top cartons and corrugated cartons. It can place multiple cartons independently from a single pick and is designed for a specific carton size or a range.
It handles carton weights above 25 kg (50 lb). A two-carton tool weighs 70 kg, rising to 90 kg with slip-sheet and pallet-hook options. The frame is welded aluminium, and pneumatic valves are available in discrete I/O, DeviceNet or Ethernet versions.
Quick Verdict
A heavy-duty clamp gripper that raises palletizing throughput by picking two cartons and placing them separately, with features for tight pallet patterns.

Design and Operating Principle
Picking two cartons and placing each independently halves robot trips while keeping full control of the pallet pattern. Self-guided cylinders deliver in-line clamping pressure for consistent hold.
The stationary bolster plate has a fine abrasive surface and a narrow profile, so cartons can be placed with a minimal gap for tight pallet layers. The movable bolster has a ribbed rubber surface for grip.
Rotating hooks on the movable bolsters secure the bottom of slip-top cartons, which would otherwise separate when lifted by their lids.
Integration and Selection
Size the robot for the 70 to 90 kg tool plus cartons, and use the extension mount for hose and cable clearance. Choose a valve version matching the cell network.
