Photoneo MotionCam-3D Color Review: Features and Uses of the 3D Camera for Moving Objects
Updated: 7 days ago

The Photoneo MotionCam-3D Color is a 3D camera that captures moving objects at up to 20 frames per second with submillimetre accuracy. The manufacturer does not publish a price. This review covers its technology, features, models and uses.
Quick Verdict
Most accurate 3D cameras for robots need the scene to stand still while they project a sequence of patterns. The MotionCam-3D avoids this with a patented method, parallel structured light, that builds the 3D image from a single exposure. The result is a camera that can scan parts on a moving conveyor or look from a moving robot arm, at up to 20 fps and at object speeds the maker gives as up to 144 km/h. It also resists ambient light, including direct sunlight. The line comes in six sizes from close-up to long range. The page used gives no figures per model for resolution, weight or protection rating.

Technology

Structured light is the most accurate common method for 3D capture at short range, but in its usual form it projects several patterns one after another, so anything that moves is blurred. Photoneo's parallel structured light captures the patterns in one sensor exposure by controlling the pixels in groups. This keeps much of the accuracy of structured light while allowing motion. The colour version adds a colour image aligned with the 3D data, which helps AI-based recognition.
Software and Features
Standards
The camera follows GigE Vision 2.1 and GenICam, so it works with standard vision software.
Instant Meshing
Software builds a 3D model from scans, for digital twins.
Hand-Eye and MultiView
Mounted on a robot, the camera can scan while moving and combine views from several positions.
Autonomous Maintenance
The maker lists a function by which the camera maintains its own calibration.
Photoneo MotionCam-3D Color Uses
The camera is used wherever the object or the camera moves.
Picking from Moving Conveyors
Parts are located without stopping the line.
Bin Picking and Machine Tending
The same camera serves static picking, at higher frame rates than sequential scanners.
Large Parts and Pallets
The maker cites inspection of pallets and large parts at a distance of 4 m.
Hot Metal
It is also used to inspect hot metal surfaces at up to 1200 °C.
