LMI Gocator 4000 Review: Specs and Uses of the Coaxial Line Confocal Sensors
Updated: 7 days ago

The LMI Gocator 4000 is a series of smart 3D coaxial line confocal sensors for shadow-free measurement at micron level. The manufacturer does not publish prices. This review covers the models, specifications, features and uses.
Quick Verdict
Sensors that view the surface at an angle leave shadows beside tall or steep features. The Gocator 4000 sends and receives light along the same axis, so it sees into holes and beside steps and measures slopes of up to 85 degrees. Lateral resolution reaches 1.8 µm, finer than any other Gocator line, at rates of up to 36 kHz. The field of view is tiny, 3.45 mm or 5 mm, and the sensor weighs about 10 kg. This is a tool for semiconductor packages and miniature electronics.

The lower scan rate applies to the full field of view and the higher rate to the high-speed configuration. For slope, the lower angles apply to specular surfaces and the higher to diffuse surfaces.
Design and Build Quality
The four models form two pairs. LMI recommends the 4011 and 4021 for the best data quality, repeatability and linearity, and names semiconductor ball grid arrays as a target they handle well. The 4010 and 4020 are more sensitive, allowing shorter exposure and a wider detection angle on highly reflective parts.
Software and Integration
Setup
A browser-based interface is used for configuration and real-time 3D visualization.
Connectivity
An open-source SDK, native drivers and industrial protocols connect the sensor to user applications, robots and PLCs.
LMI Gocator 4000 Uses
Semiconductor Packaging
Ball grid arrays and similar structures are measured without shadows.
Consumer Electronics
Fine steps, gaps and holes on small assemblies are measured at micron level.
EV Battery Production
LMI lists EV battery manufacturing among the target industries.
