LMI Gocator 2600 series 3D laser line profilers

The LMI Gocator 2600 is a series of smart 3D laser line profilers with a 9 megapixel imager, up to 4192 points per profile and scan rates of up to 10,000 Hz. The manufacturer does not publish prices. This review covers the models, specifications, features and uses.

Quick Verdict

A laser line profiler measures the shape of a part as it moves under a line of laser light, and the Gocator 2600 series does this at high resolution: each profile contains up to 4192 points. The eight models cover fields of view from about 10 mm to 2 m, so the same family serves tiny electronic parts and large panels. Like other Gocator sensors these are smart sensors, with measurement tools and decision logic inside the device and a browser interface for setup. Blue-laser models suit shiny and dark surfaces. The series page does not state a protection rating.

The lower scan rate applies to the full field of view and measurement range; the higher rate applies to a reduced field with acceleration enabled. Repeatability figures are measured on the maker's standard target with an optimized configuration. The 2690 delivers 3700 points per profile; all other models deliver 4192.

Detailed Technical Data

  • Laser classes 2, 3R and 3B on most models; classes 2 and 3R on the 2690

  • Blue laser on the 2610, 2618, 2650 and 2670; red or blue on the 2629, 2630 and 2640; red on the 2690

  • Protective covers for camera and laser windows on the 2629 and larger models

  • Clearance distances from 19.5 mm on the 2610 to 495 mm on the 2670

Design and Build Quality

The series was reworked around a 9 megapixel imager, which is where the designation 4K+ comes from. The small models, the 2610 and 2618, resolve a few micrometres across a field of 10 to 23 mm and weigh under a kilogram. The large models trade resolution for coverage, up to a field of 2 m on the 2690. From the 2629 upward, replaceable covers protect the optical windows, which matters in dirty production environments.

Software and Integration

Smart Sensor

Measurement tools run on the sensor itself, with inputs and outputs for direct connection to a line, so a part can be passed or failed without a separate computer.

Setup

Configuration and live 3D display are done in a web browser.

Multi-Sensor Systems

The sensors support alignment and networking of several units, for example to measure both sides of a part or a very wide object.

Connectivity

An open-source SDK, native drivers and industrial protocols connect the sensor to user software, robots and PLCs.

LMI Gocator 2600 Uses

The series is used for inline measurement and inspection of moving parts.

Electronics and Small Parts

The 2610 and 2618 measure small components at micrometre resolution.

General Inline Inspection

The mid-range models check dimensions, gaps and surface shape on a moving line.

Large Objects

The 2670 and 2690 scan wide objects such as panels and boards.
