Company History
Takemitsu Takizaki founded Keyence in 1974. The company grew by focusing on factory automation sensors and then extending into measurement, machine vision, code reading, laser marking and microscopes. Its headquarters building in Osaka received an international structural engineering award in 2000.
The founder remained closely associated with the company for more than fifty years. In 2026 Keyence announced that Takizaki would step down from the board on June 12, 2026, staying on as honorary chairman in a non-director role.
Business Model
Two choices set Keyence apart from other automation suppliers.
Fabless: Keyence designs and plans its products but contracts out their manufacture. That keeps capital tied up in factories low and lets the company concentrate on development.
Direct sales: it sells through its own salespeople, who demonstrate products on the customer's site and bring back detailed knowledge of what customers need. Keyence does not rely on distributors.
The result shows in the numbers. Operating income of JPY 595.8 billion on sales of JPY 1,169.3 billion is a margin of about 51%.
