Intrinsic spent five years as a project within X before graduating into an independent Alphabet company in 2021, the same route taken earlier by Waymo and Wing. Wendy Tan White has been chief executive since then.
The company grew by acquisition in 2022. In April it bought Vicarious, a robotics software firm that had raised about USD 250 million from investors including Jeff Bezos, and in December it took over several for-profit divisions of Open Robotics, the organization behind widely used open-source robot software. In January 2023 it cut 20% of its workforce.
On February 25, 2026, Alphabet announced that Intrinsic was joining Google, where it remains a distinct entity, works closely with Google DeepMind and uses Google's Gemini models and cloud services.
