Harmonic Drive MES-6, MES-9 and MEH-9 Micro Encoders manufacturer product image

The Harmonic Drive MES and MEH micro encoders provide incremental A/B feedback and an index channel in a small shaft-mounted package. MES-6 is the ultra-micro version; size-9 MES and MEH configurations provide shaft and hollow-shaft choices. These are incremental sensors for integration into a motor or mechanism, not absolute encoders, servo drives or complete positioning axes.

Quick Verdict

Consider MES/MEH when a very small feedback package and a compatible incremental input suit the mechanism. Match the full shaft, resolution and output-circuit code. Mechanical speed, pulse frequency, electrical loading and homing strategy must all fit; a fine count scale alone does not establish measurement accuracy.

Design and Engineering Assessment

The size-6 package is listed at 7.5 mm diameter and 10.5 mm length, while the size-9 package is 13 mm diameter and 20 mm length. The hollow-shaft feature belongs to size 9. Do not apply the smaller envelope to the hollow-shaft configuration merely because both are marketed as micro encoders.

The July 2026 brochure lists 06 resolutions of 100,200,300 and 360 pulses per revolution and 09 resolutions of 300,500 and 1000. The web ordering table lists a broader size-9 menu. Request the exact available resolution and full code rather than assuming every historical pulse count remains a current stocked option.

At 1000 pulses per revolution and 6000 rpm, the A-channel pulse frequency is 100 kHz, calculated as 1000×6000/60. That reaches the published frequency limit and leaves no numerical margin. With four-edge quadrature decoding, the controller may need to process 400000 edges per second. Pulse frequency, edge-processing capacity and mechanical speed are separate checks.

At 360 pulses per revolution, four-edge quadrature decoding yields 1440 counts per revolution; at 1000 pulses, it yields 4000. Those are calculated counting scales, not angular accuracy specifications. Shaft runout, mounting, phase quality, signal conditioning and the mechanism between sensor and load still influence usable feedback.

Open-Collector and Voltage-Output Selection

An open-collector output requires a suitable pull-up and receiving input. Select voltage, sink current and resistance within the exact model’s limits, then evaluate the rise time with the actual cable and input capacitance. A controller that expects a differential line-driver signal is not automatically compatible with a single-ended open-collector channel.

The 06 and 09 sinking limits are different. The brochure identifies maximum 4 mA and 20 mA respectively. Do not interpret the larger size-9 value as permission to load every small encoder identically, and do not use motor supply voltage as the encoder’s 5 V supply.

Resolution, Pulse Rate and Speed

Choose the pulse count from both required motion measurement and the highest speed. At 1000 pulses per revolution the 100 kHz limit corresponds to 6000 rpm; at lower resolutions the separate 6000 rpm mechanical ceiling can govern first. Derive the controller’s quadrature edge rate explicitly.

A high-rate input also needs appropriate filtering and timing. Excessive filtering can suppress real edges, while insufficient conditioning can count interference as motion. Evaluate acceleration, direction reversals and the worst cable configuration, rather than testing only a slow unloaded shaft.

Incremental Position and the Index Channel

Incremental counting does not inherently preserve absolute machine position after power loss. Define homing, reference recovery and the use of the index channel in the controller. An index event is useful only with an established relationship to the machine reference and a safe search procedure.

Verify A/B phase order and direction before closing a position loop. The presence of A,B andZ signals does not establish a drive’s commutation compatibility or its required additional feedback. Match the motor and drive’s full sensor requirements.

Mechanical Mounting and Shaft Loads

Use the exact shaft or hollow-shaft drawing and a mounting arrangement that avoids unwanted axial or radial loading. The small encoder is a measurement component, not a general machine-load support bearing. The manufacturer brochure gives configuration-specific shaft-load limits; do not borrow one resolution’s limits for another.

Keep alignment, coupling behavior and runout within the approved installation requirements. Starting torque can matter in small mechanisms, where the sensor’s drag is no longer negligible relative to the motor or measured load. Include it in the low-speed behavior review.

Environment and Acceptance

The stated 0–60°C range and no-condensation condition do not establish a washdown or sealed-enclosure rating. Protect the sensor and connections against the actual contamination, humidity and cable-motion conditions. Small size does not remove the need for appropriate wiring and strain relief.

At acceptance, inspect supply voltage at the encoder, channel levels, rise/fall behavior, pulse frequency, direction and reference recovery. Compare counts over a known mechanical rotation and test the highest-speed operating point. Verify the controller can process the required edge rate without losing position.

Applications and Selection

Miniature motor feedback, small robotics mechanisms and compact instrumentation

For Harmonic Drive MES-6, MES-9 and MEH-9 Micro Encoders, define the actual machine duty before selecting an ordering configuration. Include the required operating point, available installation space, environment and control interfaces. The specification table describes the product or family; the surrounding machine determines which of those features matters for the intended job.

Price and Value

Price: Request a quote for the exact configuration. Compare the product, compatible control equipment, required mechanical parts, cabling and commissioning as one installed system. A component price alone does not represent the cost of a working automation axis.

Evaluate an alternative against the same duty and acceptance criteria. Match the continuous operating requirement first, then compare transient capability, feedback, mechanical fit and support. This avoids choosing between superficially similar products whose ratings describe different operating conditions.

Pros and Cons

Advantages

  • Very small incremental feedback packages

  • Size-9 hollow-shaft and circuit choices support different integration layouts

  • Published pulse-rate and supply data enable concrete interface checks

Limitations

  • Incremental feedback requires a position-reference strategy

  • Open-collector outputs require compatible wiring and loading

  • Maximum mechanical speed and electrical response limits both apply

Harmonic Drive MES-6, MES-9 and MEH-9 Micro Encoders FAQ

Are these absolute encoders?

No. MES and MEH are incremental feedback devices. The machine needs an appropriate homing or reference-recovery strategy after a loss of position information.

Which versions offer a hollow shaft?

The manufacturer identifies the hollow-shaft option in size 9, represented by MEH-9. Do not assume the size-6 envelope applies to a hollow-shaft model.

What supply is required?

The brochure specifies 5 VDC ±10%. The no-load consumption limits are 30 mA for 06 and 40 mA for 09; output loading is a separate consideration.

Are all outputs differential line drivers?

No. The 06 brochure specifies open collector, while 09 offers voltage or open collector according to code. Match the receiver and pull-up requirements to the actual output circuit.

How many counts can 1000 pulses produce?

With four-edge quadrature decoding, 1000 pulses per revolution can yield 4000 counts per revolution. This is a calculated counting scale and does not establish angular accuracy.

Can a 1000-pulse encoder run at 6000 rpm?

That operating point produces 100 kHz of channel pulses, equal to the published response limit. Verify the exact configuration, signal quality and receiver capacity; the calculation provides no numerical frequency margin.

What does the index channel provide?

It supplies a reference event for use with a defined controller homing or referencing scheme. It does not turn the incremental encoder into a fully absolute position sensor.

What should an order and acceptance review include?

Specify shaft type, size, pulse count, output circuit, supply, receiver, cable, maximum speed, shaft loading, environment and the homing or reference strategy. Confirm the current full ordering code.

Prices are indicative and may change. Confirm the final configuration, commercial terms and delivery schedule before ordering.
