Harmonic Drive HPG Standard Planetary Gearheads manufacturer product image

HPG standard-series gearheads combine inline planetary reduction, a cross-roller output bearing and a servo-motor mounting arrangement. The family includes flange and shaft output choices and a backlash-compensating design. HPG standard, HPG-R helical, HPGP high-torque and HPG-RA right-angle products have distinct ratings and geometry; their shared branding does not make them interchangeable.

Quick Verdict

Consider standard HPG for a supported inline rotary axis where its torque-duty, backlash and motor-interface data meet the machine requirement. Select the exact frame, ratio, output and backlash option. A family peak-torque headline should not replace the separate rated-life, repeated-peak and momentary limits.

Design and Engineering Assessment

The HPG-20A-33 row lists 29 Nm rated L10, 70 Nm rated L50, 117 Nm repeated peak and 217 Nm momentary peak. These describe different rating criteria and load events. A design requiring a particular rated-life basis cannot simply substitute the higherL50 number, and normal cyclic operation should not be justified solely by the momentary figure.

The current HPG-14A-3 entry lists standard backlash below 3 arcmin, an optional reduced value below 1 arcmin and standard accuracy of 4 arcmin. Backlash and transmission accuracy are different quantities. The reduced-backlash option does not turn the gearhead into a universal sub-one-arcminute absolute-positioning system.

The frame-11B rows in the inspected table omit the reduced-backlash column value, while larger listed configurations show the option. Treat optional backlash as configuration-specific. Confirm the ordered code and acceptance condition rather than assuming every family frame offers the same option.

The product page discusses versions for AMR/AGV propulsion and washdown-hardened configurations. Those are specific application and construction choices, not blanket qualifications for a standard general-purpose unit. Confirm the approved enclosure and bearing-load arrangement for the actual propulsion or wet environment.

Inline HPG and the Related Families

Choose the mechanical architecture before comparing headline torque. HPG-R introduces helical gearing, HPGP is the high-torque family and HPG-RA redirects the motor axis. Each requires its own table, drawing and interface review. A familiar frame number does not authorize substituting another family’s mass, torque or noise claim.

The standard HPG series uses a backlash-compensating planetary design intended to retain low lost motion over life. It does not eliminate elastic deflection or establish an unconditional wear-free lifetime. Keep the mounting, lubrication, loading and service requirements with the machine documentation.

Rated Life and the Motion Profile

Calculate the process torque, gravity, acceleration and stop events for the actual cycle. Apply the manufacturer’s L10 or L50 life basis consistently. Include input speed, average operation and thermal conditions rather than combining values from unrelated rows.

The maximum input-speed entry is not automatically a continuous-speed permission. Match the motor torque-speed curve to the selected ratio and required output duty, including reflected inertia and losses. Evaluate the complete cycle, not only a low-speed holding condition.

Output Support and Bearing Loads

An integrated cross-roller bearing can support a directly attached output structure, but radial force, axial force and overturning moment still have their own limits. Apply the correct combined-load method. A pulley’s preload or an overhung tooling load may govern the design before gear torque does.

Place the load near the support plane where practical and check mounting-face and bolt loads. The available bearing capacity does not compensate for a flexible mounting plate or a poorly located load attachment. Include output tilt and structural deflection in the positioning error budget.

Motor Adapter and Output Form

Choose the servo motor and obtain its approved Quick Connect interface. Verify shaft diameter, length, pilot and mounting pattern, and follow the specified coupling-retention procedure. Convenient mounting does not mean every motor fits without a configuration review.

Flange, smooth-shaft and keyed-shaft outputs suit different load connections. Finalize the exact output geometry before designing the tooling support or coupling. Check that installation access, service removal and cable routing remain practical in the assembled machine.

Backlash and Output Acceptance

Evaluate reversing behavior under representative torque and temperature. The motor encoder observes input-side motion, while gear compliance, finite backlash and load-support deformation occur downstream. A fine encoder scale does not directly establish tool-point accuracy.

Define separate targets for backlash, standard accuracy, repeatability and loaded settling. Where an optional reduced-backlash unit is ordered, confirm its actual acceptance condition and code. Validate stopping and gravity-holding functions in the motor-drive and machine-safety design independently.

Applications and Selection

Inline servo axes, rotary tooling and supported precision automation mechanisms

For Harmonic Drive HPG Standard Planetary Gearheads, define the actual machine duty before selecting an ordering configuration. Include the required operating point, available installation space, environment and control interfaces. The specification table describes the product or family; the surrounding machine determines which of those features matters for the intended job.

Price and Value

Price: Request a quote for the exact configuration. Compare the product, compatible control equipment, required mechanical parts, cabling and commissioning as one installed system. A component price alone does not represent the cost of a working automation axis.

Evaluate an alternative against the same duty and acceptance criteria. Match the continuous operating requirement first, then compare transient capability, feedback, mechanical fit and support. This avoids choosing between superficially similar products whose ratings describe different operating conditions.

Pros and Cons

Advantages

  • Cross-roller output support integrates load-bearing and reduction functions

  • Multiple output forms and motor adapters support different machine layouts

  • Standard and supported reduced-backlash options allow explicit selection

Limitations

  • Backlash, accuracy and rated-life criteria require separate checks

  • Related HPG families have different construction and ratings

  • Motor, control, holding and environmental scope remain configuration-specific

Who Should Consider Harmonic Drive HPG Standard Planetary Gearheads?

Harmonic Drive HPG Standard Planetary Gearheads FAQ

Is standard HPG the same as HPGP or HPG-R?

No. StandardHPG, high-torque HPGP and helical HPG-R are different families. Use the selected family’s exact drawing and ratings.

Does every unit offer less than 1 arcmin backlash?

No. Less than 3 arcmin is the standard family description. Reduced backlash below 1 arcmin is an option only on supported configurations; the inspected frame-11B rows do not list that option.

Does the backlash option establish absolute accuracy?

No. The HPG-14A-3 row lists 4 arcmin standard accuracy separately from standard and reduced backlash values. Measure the complete axis under its actual load and conditions.

What are the HPG-20A-33 torque ratings?

The current table lists 29 Nm rated L10, 70 Nm rated L50, 117 Nm repeated peak and 217 Nm momentary peak. Use the relevant rating basis for the load event and life requirement.

Can rated L50 replace a rated L10 requirement?

No. They use different life-rating criteria. Apply the manufacturer’s corresponding sizing method and the required reliability basis consistently.

What output arrangements are available?

The manufacturer describes flange output, smooth shaft and keyed shaft with a tapped center hole. Availability and dimensions depend on the full ordering configuration.

Are washdown features included in a standard unit?

Do not assume so. The page identifies washdown-hardened versions as a configuration choice. Obtain the documented protection and operating conditions for the exact supplied unit.

What information should accompany a quote?

Provide family, frame, ratio, output form, backlash option, motor shaft and mounting dimensions, torque-speed duty, combined bearing loads, environment and load-point acceptance targets.

Prices are indicative and may change. Confirm the final configuration, commercial terms and delivery schedule before ordering.
