Güdel FP 3-Axis Gantry Review: Specs and Uses of the Heavy-Payload Area Gantry
Updated: 7 days ago

The Güdel FP is a three-axis area gantry for moving heavy loads over large working areas. The manufacturer does not publish a price. This review covers its specifications, features and uses.
Quick Verdict
The FP is the largest of Güdel's linear gantries: two parallel beams carry a bridge and a vertical axis, so the tool reaches any point in a rectangular volume from above. Five standard sizes run from the FP-3, at up to 800 N, to the FP-7, at up to 31,250 N. Each size is offered in three tunings that trade payload against speed, and repeatability is ±0.02 mm. The FP-5-HP is a separate high-performance version, shown for battery handling, at up to 225 m/min with ±0.1 mm repeatability. Permissible payload falls as the vertical stroke grows beyond 1.0 to 1.6 m, depending on size. Stroke limits should be taken from the data sheet.

Güdel FP 3-Axis Gantry Technical Specifications
The table below lists what the manufacturer states.
Model | Max payload force | Y speed, high dynamic | Z speed, high dynamic | Repeatability | Carriage mass |
FP-3 | 800 N | 150 m/min | 112.5 m/min | ±0.02 mm | 60 kg |
FP-4 | 2,000 N | 200 m/min | 120 m/min | ±0.02 mm | 60 kg |
FP-5 | 5,000 N | 150 m/min | 100 m/min | ±0.02 mm | 178.8 kg |
FP-5-HP | 5,000 N, high dynamic | 225 m/min | 165 m/min | ±0.1 mm | 377 kg |
FP-6 | 12,500 N | 200 m/min | 120 m/min | ±0.02 mm | 377 kg |
FP-7 | 31,250 N | 150 m/min | 75 m/min | ±0.02 mm | 500 kg |
Payloads are stated as forces in newtons. Carriage mass excludes motor, cabinet and cables. Payload decreases with long vertical strokes. For the FP-5-HP the maker's text also gives 1,100 kg on the Y carriage and up to 500 kg high-dynamic payload.
Design and Build Quality

Beams come in standard sections, so length can be chosen freely and extended later. Tapped holes on a 100 mm pitch and supports for drip and cable trays are built in, and legs can be placed anywhere along the beam.
