Company History and Ownership

Dematic's history is a chain of industrial owners. The business was founded in 1819 in Wetter in Germany, became part of Deutsche Maschinenbau-AG (Demag) in 1910, and was acquired by Mannesmann in 1973. After the purchase of the American conveyor maker Rapistan in 1992 it was reorganized as Mannesmann Demag Foerdertechnik, and renamed Mannesmann Dematic in 1997.

Siemens bought the company around 2001 and merged it with its own logistics activities as Siemens Dematic. In 2006 Siemens spun the industrial and distribution logistics unit off as Dematic GmbH & Co. KG, and the private equity firm Triton took a majority. AEA Investors and Teachers' Private Capital, the investment arm of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, bought it in 2012. In June 2016 KION Group agreed to buy Dematic for about USD 2.1 billion, and the deal closed that November.
