Cobots & Robotic Arm FAQs, Cobot Safety, US Suppliers

Where to buy cobots with safety features in the US?

Where to buy cobots with safety features in the US?

US buyers can obtain cobots with configurable safety functions through established manufacturers and qualified distributors or integrators, including the Universal Robots and FANUC America channels. Select the exact robot and controller configuration based on documented safety capabilities. A product described as collaborative is not, by itself, proof that the finished application can operate safely without guarding.

Ask for model-specific safety documentation

Request the safety manual, applicable declarations and certificates, supported safety functions, stated performance levels, and operating limitations for the exact arm, controller, and software configuration. Confirm what functions depend on external devices or optional equipment. Marketing claims about certification should not be extended automatically to an entire manufacturer's range or to a completed custom cell.

Assess the whole application

Consider the robot, tool, workpiece, fixtures, connected machinery, layout, and people who enter the area. Hazards include trapping, sharp or hot parts, dropped loads, and process-related risks. Available protective measures may involve limiting motion, speed, or force, monitoring separation, interlocked guarding, or other engineered controls. The appropriate combination follows the application's risk assessment and validation rather than a blanket promise of fence-free operation.

Choose a supplier that can demonstrate validation

Ask who will perform the assessment, configure the safety system, test the protective measures, and document the results. Where human contact is part of the intended collaborative application, relevant contact conditions must be evaluated using an appropriate method by competent personnel. An emergency stop is a supplementary protective function; it is not a substitute for preventing exposure to foreseeable hazards.

Make safety part of procurement and operation

Include the applicable robot and machinery safety requirements in the specification, such as the relevant editions of ISO 10218 and US ANSI/A3 R15.06 requirements where applicable. Standards are not interchangeable with a universal government approval. Obtain operating procedures, maintenance instructions, and change-control responsibilities. Reassess the application after meaningful changes to tooling, payload, speeds, layout, or the surrounding process.
