An IP rating describes an enclosure's tested protection against specified forms of ingress. It is relevant when selecting a robotic arm for dust, moisture, or other environmental exposure. The rating applies to the stated component and test conditions, not automatically to every part of the installed system.

What this means in practice

An arm, wrist, controller, pendant, connector, and end effector can have different environmental limits. Ratings also do not establish resistance to every chemical, cleaning method, temperature, or process contaminant. Environmental suitability requires the manufacturer's detailed documentation.

Read the rating alongside environmental limits

An ingress rating addresses specified enclosure tests; it does not describe every exposure encountered in production. Temperature, chemicals, abrasive debris, and the actual cleaning method can raise separate compatibility questions. Ratings may also vary between the arm and its peripheral equipment.

Prepare an environmental specification that includes normal operation and cleaning. Identify exposed connectors, wrist equipment, hoses, and controller placement. Obtain documentation for those conditions and components so that the selected installation is assessed as a system rather than by a single rating on the arm.

Key points

  • Check which components the stated rating covers.

  • Compare the actual exposure and cleaning procedure with documented limits.

  • Include tools, connectors, cables, and control equipment in the review.

Practical example and next step

For a coolant-exposed machine-tending cell, evaluate splash direction, connector protection, material compatibility, and drainage. For washdown, confirm the permitted cleaning method explicitly. Do not substitute an enclosure number for a complete environmental specification.
