Cobots & Robotic Arm FAQs, Cobot Leasing, Robotics as a Service

Can cobots be leased or rented in the US?

Can cobots be leased or rented in the US?

Yes. US businesses can investigate equipment leasing, supplier rental arrangements, and Robotics as a Service, although availability depends on the provider, application, region, and credit approval. Universal Robots identifies DLL as a financing partner and directs buyers to their distributor. Formic offers automation through a recurring service model. These arrangements differ substantially in ownership, maintenance responsibility, flexibility, and total financial commitment.

Understand what kind of agreement is offered

An equipment lease generally finances specified assets for an agreed term. A rental may provide shorter access but can still exclude engineering, tooling, and installation. Robotics as a Service typically combines the use of equipment with an operating or support service. Do not assume that a monthly price includes every component or guarantees a production outcome; the contract must define the actual equipment, service, and performance obligations.

Account for integration even when the robot is temporary

The workcell still needs appropriate mounting, tooling, programming, machine interfaces, and application safeguards. These costs can remain significant when the robot is rented. Clarify who pays for feasibility work, installation, removal, restoration of the production area, and any customer-specific equipment that cannot be reused. A trial arm on a bench is commercially different from a validated production installation.

Compare the full contract economics

Review term length, minimum payments or usage, deposits, interest or effective financing cost, insurance, maintenance, consumables, service exclusions, and renewal terms. Establish who owns software, fixtures, and programs and whether there is a purchase option. Ask how product changes, relocation, reduced demand, early termination, and equipment replacement affect payments. Obtain a current written offer rather than relying on an old advertised monthly rate.

Choose according to business uncertainty

A recurring model may be attractive where conserving capital or transferring technical responsibility matters. Ownership may be more suitable for a stable, long-term process with strong internal engineering capability. As an illustrative comparison, a $2,000 monthly commitment totals $72,000 over 36 months before additional charges; that arithmetic is not a real offer or an ownership-equivalent comparison. Compare expected production benefit and responsibilities over the same period.
