Zimmer Group – End-of-Arm Tooling Program for Flexible Assembly Robot Cell
Company:
Zimmer Group
Start Date:
2022
Category:
End-of-Arm Tooling
Project Description:
Zimmer Group designed and supplied end-of-arm tooling systems for a flexible robot assembly cell handling diverse product families in consumer electronics manufacturing. The tooling program included quick-change interfaces, vacuum-based grippers for flat components, electric parallel grippers for connectors and housings, and force-torque sensors enabling compliant insertion of press-fit parts. Tooling was designed for rapid changeover between product SKUs in under 90 seconds using automatic tool change docking stations. The gripper designs were validated through mechanical simulation and physical testing across the full weight and surface finish range of product variants. Contamination control was critical because electronic components are sensitive to particles; all tooling materials and surfaces were selected and validated accordingly. The program included on-site commissioning and troubleshooting support during production ramp-up.
