UFactory – Machine Tending Cobot Deployment for CNC Machine Shop
Company:
UFactory
Start Date:
2022
Category:
Machine Tending
Project Description:
UFactory implemented collaborative robot machine tending cells at a contract machining company that operates dozens of CNC lathes and machining centers. The cobots load raw billets into machine chucks, start machining cycles, unload finished parts, and place them onto conveyor belts or measurement stations. Gripper tooling is designed for quick-change to handle different part geometries across product families without full reprogramming. The cobot uses a simplified tablet-based programming interface so machine operators with no robotics background can adjust programs and set up new jobs within minutes. Force control prevents damage if parts or fixtures are misaligned. Lights-out machining is enabled at night when operators are not present. Productivity gains include 85-95% machine utilization versus 60-70% with manual tending, and consistent cycle times without fatigue-related variability.
